You can expect a warm welcome

from John and Amanda

Keen football fans may recognise the name and face of John Turner. Many of the regulars to the Jolly Sailor will be happy to tell you that John has had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus. John was a professional footballer for 16 years, having played ‘in goal’ for Derby County, Torquay United, Chesterfield, Burnley, Peterborough United and

Weymouth Town.

Many former Torquay United players decided to make the permanent home in the South Devon area, and John was no exception. Along with his wife Amanda, John has been in the pub industry for since 1987 (The Fortune of War in Torquay), and he became landlord of The Jolly Sailor
in 2000. John and Amanda have both become a much valued part of the village community.

Unfortunately, an injury forced John to ‘hang up his boots’ long before he would have wished, but he is thankful for the career he had in the professional game. His love of football continues ... there’s never a live match missed on the big screen. One thing is for sure, you will never be bored listening to John’s anecdotes from his career, his fellow players, and managers. There are plenty of short stories (and some tall ones!) to keep you amused.
